What We're All About
Katrin Urwitz & Jorge Frias
Stockholm – Sweden Ciudad de Bs. As. – Argentina
Dancing together since 2012, exploring the differences and the similarities in leading and following.
Our focus is fluidity, constant connection and freedom in the dance.
We consider both Roles equally active in a two-way conversation, therefor the option of changing roles it’s always available in our dance.
Katrin Urwitz
Tango dancer/teacher – Shoemaker (Katrinski) – Tai Chi / Chi Gong instructor
I started dancing tango on my first visit to Buenos Aires 2006.
During the first year of learning to dance I started to experiment with both roles, and I kept dancing both roles ever since. Even though my main focus for some time was “following”, learning to lead has improved my understanding of the dance in every way.
I started to dance with Jorge 2012 and soon after we started investigating fluid role change in Tango, it is something we keep in our dance, the attention, the active and listening mindset, always prioritising communication in both roles, when changing roles and when we stay in our initial roles.
Jorge Frias
Tango dancer/teacher – Tango dj
I started dancing tango in 2008 by a recommendation from an office colleague.
In the first months of learning I was mainly leading but always asking my teachers to lead me
to understand better. Those teachers organized the práctica after and eventually they asked me for some help with the music and that’s how I started DJing. Soon I found a class where everybody did both roles and I loved it and stayed for many years studying with that maestra.
After some years dancing and teaching as a leader with different partners I met Katrin, who also was exploring both roles and we started practicing and dancing together. After years working and developing our own style we start to exhibit in milongas and teach double roles and change of roles.
Reviews
Katrin and Jorge make traditional tango very modern. Both are fluent in both roles and they are both fluent in English and Spanish, among other languages. They are funny and wise as instructors, and also fantastic dancers.
